I wrote this in response to someones post in thier blog then found out when trying to post it was friends only.
ok yea, some token background characters that get seen every 6th ep or whatever. But its typical. Cheers, a show which I dearly loved, had no regular black cast memebers. I remeber seeing them as patrons and maybe get line or two but nothing important. Night court on the other hand had several.
Even northern exposure had at least one black character (whats his names brother). All sitcoms from about the same time period. Its one thing when no shows had black characters, you really cant fault the dick van dyke show, or the other 50's era stuff, but hell lucy's husband was from cuba. It wasnt right, but it was the norm back then. But during the run of friends most shows had at least the "token" black character. Sure some people might say "at least they didnt bow to PC pressure and alter thier work just to be PC" but I think thats just a crutch. I hate to admit it but we socialize our kids via tv, and I would rather diverse shows where racism is view badly than a show that promotes segragation.
somewhere in my archive I have a tirad about friends. If I can find it I will post the link, its pretty good.
thanks for commenting on my blog.
